Sense the Moment,
Savor the Time: Angsana Spa

IN FORMER TIMES, when one journeyed to the cities of Bath, Baden Baden or Rotura, it was usually for a single purpose to take the waters to participate in the self-indulgent pleasure of a spa and all the therapy that goes with it. Of course, environmental pressures have changed since those genteel days but the human need for a bit of 'feel good' body pampering remains as important as ever.

These days in Chiangmai it is very easy to indulge in a treatment at one of the many spas that have opened in the past 3 years. One suggestion is The Angsana Spa Green View- Chiangmai tucked away in the challenging golf course, Green Valley Country Club on Chotana Road.

The grand opening of the Angsana Spa at the Green Valley Country Club was truly spectacular. For those in Chiangmai who missed the grand event, the performance by the Sbun Nga Visual Studio troupe was a visual treat entitled "The Four Elements of Life". The 25 performers were dressed in beautiful silks, golden jewelry and exotic accessories. Processions were interspersed with cultural dances from several countries of the Mekong region. The grand finale was a spectacular show of fireworks. Yes, Angsana has definitely established itself as a getaway for all the senses.

The Angsana Spa takes its name from the exotic Angsana tree. A tall tropical rain forest tree noted for is crown of golden fragrant flowers which burst into bloom unexpectedly for a day, then close, and bloom again suddenly. The Angsana tree teaches one to live life spontaneously, to sense the moment and savor time as it passes inexorably. The privacy and tranquility of the Angsana Spa allows one to shed the cares of the world and rediscover sensory pleasures. And so the contemporary holistic, non-clinical tropical spa presents a unique blend of spa rituals that make use of natural ingredients like native flowers, exotic scents, herbs, spices and plants. Drawing expertise from Banyan Tree Spa, Angsana places special emphasis on the use of aromatherapy and the sense of touch in the pampering of the body, mind and soul.

The spa setting is a quiet retreat away from the competitiveness of the golfing activity. The lofty second story area allows pampering and the recharging of internal batteries in total privacy. Angsana Spa is the sister brand of the award-winning Banyan Tree Spa. The standards of excellence that are synonymous with the Banyan Tree Master Brand and are familiar to world travelers whether at Bintan Island Indonesia, Queensland Australia, Bangalore India and on North Male Attol in the Maldives locations. In addition to Chiangmai, currently there are 3 Angsana Spas in Phuket.

To assist in selecting the appropriate treatment, the spa menu "Sensing the Moment" describes each of the treatments. Just reading the descriptions is an experience in itself. Under "Massage" there are 8 variations. Following massage, 5 types of body treatments are suggested as well as 3 body scrubs and 4 facials for selection. The recommended treatment packages are: the 90-minute "Taste of Heaven", the 120 minute "Contentment in Paradise' and the 180 minute "Satisfy Your Soul". The most popular body treatment is "Tangerine Body Wrap", a body wrap speaking of fruity goodness Using a special blend of tangerines and rice flour, the natural fruit acids cleanse and detoxify. Finished with a fruit body lotion, the skin feels smooth and baby soft.

The oils created especially for Angsana Spa for use in the treatments enhance specific moods. The scent of ylang ylang brings on euphoria. For invigoration, try lemon grass, Peppermint entices a state of dreaminess, thyme brings on tranquility, turmeric creates melodies and while citrus orange oil stimulates on vitality.

The treatment room is spacious with two armchairs and ample luxuries such as a Jacuzzi and shower. The therapist brings a light tea. While the client sits, the therapist helps remove the client's shoes and then wraps the feet in hot moist towers that are scented with lemon grass essence. She gently massages the feet and toes still in the hot towels. That treatment alone is rejuvenating. When the therapist enquired about any particularly sensitive places she should refrain from massaging and where I'd prefer heavier massage, my confidence in the professionalism of the therapist soared even more. The therapist's expression of personal interest in my comfort indicated the degree of attentiveness for all clients. The massage table was purpose built with a 'well' to place the face to relieve stress on the neck when lying in one position for a long period.

Having the "Angsana Massage" put me in an infinite spiritual place. The signature full body massage uses palms and fingertips to stimulate muscles for improved circulation. Massage is a great way to take care of your body. The therapist used a specially blended tea tree oil that is suitable for all skin types and promotes balancing of the senses. Taking inspiration from nature the choice of herbal oils puts one in touch with the sweetness of life. The world of essence in the aromatic air has long been associated with the healing culture of the orient. The strength and flexibility of the therapist's arms and hand movements brings on a sense of balance and centering. As my body was being kneaded all the tensions I had brought with me seeped away. The feeling that came over me was that of blissful happiness and total relaxation.

Leaving the spa, I felt pleased that I spent time on myself. I plan to actively live my motto Spa-ing is a girl's best friend.
