The Colors of Thailand in Stamps!
In this electronic age of PC's, mobile telephones, facsimile machines and Internet emails it may be, perhaps, thought that 'snail mail' and the World Postal Union is not as much in demand as it used to be. Not so! In order to meet competition from electronic sources, countries around the world have upgraded traditional Postal Services to improve reliability, efficiency, economy, and spread of services. Speed of delivery is very swift using Airmail plus EMS and other special courier services.
Thailand is no exception to this drive for improvement and THAI POST is certainly no slug when it comes to getting your postcard or letter sent on its way. THAI POST is also one of the countries which have fully computerized their Point of Sale outlets. When a letter is handed in at a Chiangmai post office, it will be weighed, the country of destination keyed into the computer and a stamp, of the correct value, will be automatically generated for affixing to the envelope.
Of course, this does not mean that 'traditional' postage stamps have been forgotten; Thailand produces some of the worlds most interesting and beautiful stamps, which have been admired and collected by philatelists for many years. A visit to the Philatelic Section at Mae Ping Post Office (very helpful English-speaking staff) will show some of the most collectable issues. Such stamps feature not only the scenery and colors of Thailand but also commemorate important dates in Thailand's history and show members of the Thai Royal Family both present and past.
The Mae Ping Post Office is located between Warorot Market and Nawaratt Bridge and is only a stone-throw from the postal museum. By the way, if you should want a sheet of Thai stamps with your own photograph as the feature, then the Mae Ping Post Office will arrange this for you. Actually, the 'stamp' with your picture is 'twinned' with an official, full value Thai stamp. Such a sheet makes a wonderful souvenir of Thailand the photo need not necessarily be your own likeness but could, perhaps, be your spouse, partner, children, pet, or mother-in-law!
Thai Postage Stamps beautifully reproducing the colors, peoples and places of Thailand make a great and very portable gift and a unique one if you choose to have your choice of photo used as the main feature! A selection of historic Thai Postage Stamps are printed below.
