The 13th Annual Chiangmai International Cricket Sixes Tournament

a sixes team THE 13th ANNUAL Chiangmai International Cricket Sixes Tournament will be held as usual on the beautiful grounds of the Chiangmai Gymkhana Club, Lamphun Road. This popular six-a-side competition attracts teams from all around the world, including many internationally known players. This year's tournament is particularly special, as the event will occur during International Cricket Week, a worldwide event announced by the partnership of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the United Nations. The Chiangmai Sixes Tournament has been recognized by the ICC/UN as a part of this global celebration of the sport of cricket.International Cricket Week will be celebrated from April 2 to 9 this year; the Chiangmai Sixes Tournament will take place from Tuesday, April 4 through Sunday, April 9.

As the 13th Chiangmai Sixes Tournament coincides with International Cricket Week, the Chiangmai Cricket Sixes coordinators in Australia have been in contact with the ICC, and it has been agreed that certain ambassadors and representatives from the ICC will attend the Chiangmai Sixes event.

Initiated in 1988, the Sixes are now firmly established as an event to enter by teams from the major cricket-playing nations, and teams from Australia, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand are expected to play in this year's tournament. The Sixes has become a major social occasion, as well as an outstanding sporting event.

The schedule of matches begins at 8:30 each morning, and finishes in the late afternoon. Sixes is unlike other forms of cricket, with their sedate image and lengthy matches. Each match lasts only about 40 minutes, during which time high scores are a must, so big hitting, accurate bowling and athletic fielding are the order of the day.

A planned highlight of this year's Chiangmai Sixes tournament is the inclusion of a "Kango" cricket match for children 8 to 14 years of age, tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, April 8. The Australian Cricket Board, with support from the Australian government, plans to provide the necessary equipment for Kango cricket, and has already sent a coach to Thailand who has agreed to provide some basic training for interested children here in Chiangmai prior to the tournament.

The Gymkhana Club is located just off the Chiangmai - Lamphun Road, not far from the Rimping Supermarket. Admission is free, and there will be a wide range of food and drinks available, as well as programs and souvenirs of the tournament. It is a great place to relax and watch the competition, even if you are not a dedicated cricket fan. Go and enjoy the camaraderie that is one of the features of this yearly event. This is Chiangmai's only scheduled international sporting event.
