The Flair of Spain

In May 2007, a European Union library collection was donated to Chiang Mai University to mark the auspicious occasion of HM the King's 80th birthday anniversary. The collection comprised over 640 books donated by the European Union Member States embassies and cultural organizations as well as the Delegation of the European Commission. A wide variety of topics are covered ranging from history and politics to art, design and culture. Whether the readers' interest is about European football stadium design or the future of the French countryside; Slovakian cuisine or Finnish economic, each will gain a fascinating and informative insight into the European Union and its member states.

Spanish Embassy works with Chiang Mai University to promote the Spanish department.Recently, The Spanish Embassy initiated the opening of the Spanish department in the Humanities faculty of Chiang Mai University. A native Spanish teacher and designer is teaching full time at the university.

The Spanish Embassy in Thailand has continued working with the Chiang Mai University by assisting the establishment of a Spanish Language department. The opening of the Spanish department was very festive. Colorful with red and yellow streamers and the colorful national flags decorative the Humanities library. The students were so enthusiastic to organize entertainment of Spanish folk dancing as well as the flamenco dancer from Aree Dance Institute in Chiang Mai.

The opening speech by Ambassador Juan Manuel Lopez Nadal informed the audience that Spanish is the third largest spoken language in the world. At this time more and more Spanish speaking visitors are coming to Chiang Mai, there fore, the knowledge of Spanish important for sustainable tourism.

Alberto Mayana Bonel, Minister-Counsellor/Deputy Head of Mission, was on hand to welcome the many diplomatic corps based in Chiang Mai. In the near future, the Spanish Embassy will support events in performing arts and cultural heritage. The Spanish department will play a role in contributing to stronger Spain and Thailand relations.

Visit of Trade Representatives

Trade representatives meet with Boonsom's Spirulina FarmRecently the Boonsom's Spirulina Farm owned by Khun Somchye Boonsom and Mrs. Jiamjit Boonsom hosted two Bangkok based businessmen to observe the agriculture business in Mae Wang, southern Chiang Mai Province. Mr. Dmitry Smakhtin, Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in Thailand was accompanied by his wife and children for their first visit to northern Thailand. Mr. Smakhtin was accompanied by Khun Phisak Nivataphand, Vice President of the Thai Russian Chamber of Commerce.

Both Mr. Dmitry Smakhtin and Khun Phisak Nivataphand would like to meet other Chiangmai businessmen to exchange information about investment in the Russian Federation.

During the weekend visit, the businessmen had the chance to see the many sights of Chiangmai and especially liked the Sunday Walking street bazaar.

The Mae Wang Area where the Boonsom's Spirulina Farm is located has a wealth of sight-seeing. Namely, the Buddhist Meditation Center, Japanese World War II Memorial, and Elephant safari and rafting, cattle and flea market on Saturdays in Sanpatong and on Sundays visit the markets at Baan Wiang of Tha Lee, Ancient City at Wiang Tha-Gaan. The Wat Prathart Doi Jom Thong houses Buddha relic about 58 kms. south of Chiangmai city.

On the next visit the businessmen are looking forward to staying overnight at Doi Inthanon National Park is the highest peak in Thailand. Among nature's beautiful spots are: Mae Ya waterfall, Mae Glang Waterfall, Borijinda Cave, Washiratharn Fall, Siripoom waterfall, Zai Luang waterfall, and Mae Bpaan waterfall.
