FERC Gala 2007
One of the main sponsoring events in Chiangmai is the yearly Benefit Gala, organized by FERC. The Foundation for the Education of Rural Children raises funds, presents events, builds schools and dormitories and provides learning materials, scholarships and necessary living expenses for needy children in Thailand. In cooperation with other charitable groups, this year's Gala proceeds will be given to the following five projects in northern Thailand.
The Ponsawan Child Development Center, which assists impoverished hill tribe children to obtain a basic education, will build a large vegetable garden, where children will be taught to grow organic produce.
The Development Programme DEPDC will be provided with educational equipment for 180 children who are at risk of being trafficked for sexual or labor exploitation.
The Sangha Metta Project endeavors to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals and communities in Southeast Asia. Special attention will be given to migrant Shan youth who are at risk of sexual exploitation and drug trafficking.
The Burmese Child Care Center, founded by a Burmese immigrant worker, runs an educational project for Burmese immigrant children who often lack the papers necessary to attend Thai schools.
The Japanese-initiated Link Project provides linkages between forest and water and the people who use them in an effort to improve the quality of life of remote tribal people and their children.
To raise money for these projects, the eighth FERC Benefit Gala will be organized on Saturday February 17, 2007. Starting at 18:30 PM, our guests will be received in the gardens of the new luxurious Sofitel Riverside Chiang Mai on the banks of the Ping River for a program with a succulent dinner, special entertainment, dancing and raffle. Win valuable hotel packages, designer items, artwork, and cruises provided by local and national companies in the Silent Auction. The dress code is "formal attire or national dress," so it's a splendid opportunity to take your fancy clothes out for a fabulous evening!
Tickets/donations at 1.900 Baht per person are available at the Sofitel Riverside Chiang Mai on Changklan Road, at GongDee Gallery on Nimmanhaemin Road, Soi 1, at Rimping Super Markets (Chotana and Ruam Chok branches in early February), or by phone from FERC board members: 089.557.5388 (Carolina Thompson), or 053.868.209 (Jan Verwers).
