Art Exhibitions in Chiang Mai
Several exhibitions are going on during December and January. Exhibitions take place in private galleries such as La Luna Gallery on Charoenrasd Road and at the Art Museum in Chiang Mai University on Nimmanhemin Road. The Chiang Mai City Arts & Culture Museum, at Three Kings Statue, is fascinating with permanent exhibition on two floors as well as revolving exhibition on the first floor. Thai Orchids Exhibition
January 20-22
Hundreds of orchid specialists participate in this exhibition. The Foundation of Native Orchids holds an Orchid Drawing Contest for Youth on January 21 from 8 am to 2. pm at the Mae Jo University. The contest is open to four age groups : 5 to 8 years, 9 to 12 years, 13 to 15 years and 16 to 18 years. More information at 053 873 950 or 053 873 340.

Chinese New Year (Troot Jeen)

It's time for the "Year of the Dog" to start howling. The world could use some loyalty, affection and tenacity after suffering from the "Pox of the Chicken" in 2005. Families celebrating Chinese New Year may travel for four days to one week. Around 5 a.m. the sound of fireworks is an alarm clock. Hotels, planes, busses and trains will be filled to capacity especially as the 2006 holiday falls at the weekend. Banks do not close for this event.

Hobbyists will learn the latest techniques during this exhibition devoted to the newest developments in the radio control plane field at the 3rd floor of Panthip Plaza on Changklan Road.

Lanna people traditionally practiced "Taan Khao Mai" (or Taan Khao Jee - Khao Laam) that is the offering of rice freshly harvested and "Taan Lua Hing Fai Pra Jao" the offering of firewood to the Buddha. These events and traditional snacks can be enjoyed at the Art Museum of the Chiang Mai University on Nimmanhemin Road at Suthep intersection.

Chiang Mai Art Market
Every Sunday evening until February
Walking Street hosts a new event behind the Art & Cultural Center from the hours of 5.30 pm to 10 pm. Here on display will be all types of art produced by Chiang Mai Artists. Look forward to folk entertainment as well as shopping for handicrafts and handwoven textiles famous in this Province. Second walking street is held on Saturday on Wualai Road the former "Silver" and lacquerware area of Chiang Mai. A third walking street is devoted to used and second hand items at the northern block of Bumrungrasd Road between Prince Royal School and Payap Universities. You may find some unusual door hinges, clasps or antique locks among the treasures there.
Borsarng Umbrella Festival

THE UMBRELLA FESTIVAL, one of the most popular annual festivals in Chiang Mai Province, is celebrated at Borsarng Village in the Sankampaeng District. It is located 12 kms. from the inner city of Chiang Mai, or 9 kms. from the Superhighway intersection (see Maps).
There are parades along the main street of the village each day of the festival. The biggest parade is on the opening day (Fri, Jan 20) featuring traditional ancient bells, drums and Lanna musical instruments, ‘fingernail' and tribal dancers, processions of floats decorated with painted umbrellas, beauty contestants, Lanna costumes. See traditional offerings for monks, woodcarving contests plus fan and umbrella painting contests.
Flower Carnival

The carnival atmosphere can be felt throughout the city features flower-covered floats parading through the city on Saturday morning. Beauty contests, flower exhibitions, cultural performances within the Buag Haad City Park. February 3-5.
