Hearts of Gold

Hats off to Kitty and Ivy, two grand ladies from Melbourne, Australia. The two have been making hand knitted dolls for the children who are residents in the Vieng Ping Home, Mae Rim, Chiangmai for a number of years. How did this home come to the attention of these wonderful ladies, you may ask. On one of his many trips to Chiangmai, Keith Leach of Australia was visiting his boy hood friend Trevor Bosnitch (better known as 'Yum Yum') who has lived in Thailand for 22 years. Trevor then introduced Keith to Gino Wernikoff, also a long time resident. Gino is a friend of Goson and Margaret Bhadungzong, who are the publishers of Welcome to Chiangmai and Chiangrai magazine. In that monthly issue, they had written an article about the home providing shelter and love to many orphaned and abandoned children. The three men took a drive to the Vieng Ping Home on the Mae Rim road.

Keith, a big burly Aussie with a walrus mustache, brought some small gifts for the children. One little girl was so fascinated by this giant of a man, she ran over and clasped her palms together in front of her in the Thai fashion or 'wai', then threw her arms around one of his legs and hugged him. He was so moved by this small child that he told the story to his two aunts back in Australia. They, being of good heart, began knitting dolls for these unfortunate children and have been sending over knitted dolls ever since that first visit.

A big hug and thank you from the children to the two grannies so far in distance but very near in spirit of compassion.. (Note: Typical of the spunk of Australian women, Kitty and Ivy joined the home army during World War II and worked on the Australian railroad.)
